Detection rates

Avast Free Antivirus as well as AVG Free Antivirus both offers a great detection rates. Although test results are currently very similar, you can expect that detection rates will be same in a future. Avast and AVG merged in October 2016 and you can expect consolidation of both antivirus engine into one ultimate.

Additional features

When it comes to additional features, Avast Free Antivirus currently takes a lead as it offers more additional features. Beside common features such as antivirus and anti-malware Avast offers cleaning of browser, secure browser for online banking, password manager.

None of these features is currently available in AVG Free Antivirus although there are few additional features integrated in both brands.

User interface

Both user interfaces are relatively easy to use. Avast Free Antivirus displays protection status of your PC on the main screen and you can easily access scanning from the main window. Additional features are hidden under tools in the main navigation.

AVG Free Antivirus displays protection status and offer you access to all antivirus shields such as File-shield, Mail-shield or Web-shield.

Although it is just personal opinion and matter of preference, Avast is more suitable option for less computer-advanced users and therefore we consider it as winner against AVG Free Antivirus when it comes to user interface.

Summary

Although overall winner is Avast, both brands will offer a good detection rate and quite a lot additional security features. No matter if you choose Avast or AVG for your Windows 10 PC  it will be a decent option.

As we have written above, Avast and AVG are already one company so we can expect a lot of consolidation of features in the future which makes decision even less relevant.
